Nursing professionals spend a significant amount of inpatient and outpatient care with patients, providing education and having effective conversations about sensitive topics, such as alcohol/substance use and contraception, can be challenging in a busy clinical setting. Bias, prejudice (unconscious or otherwise), and a lack of understanding of patient situations and cultural perspectives also act as barriers to effective communication, compromising the patient’s care and their relationship with the health system as well as their overall health outcomes. Due to the inherent imbalance of power in the patient-provider relationship, the impetus to facilitate meaningful communication falls upon healthcare workers, necessitating the development and implementation of skills-based training within the framework of cultural safety and respectful maternity care communication guidelines.
