Orient triage staff with AWHONN’s Obstetric Triage Education bundle, which includes the MFTI and OB Triage Education online modules.
Obstetric Triage Education
This interactive case study education helps sharpen nurse clinicians’ clinical knowledge and skills who work in triage or obstetric emergency department (OBED). Its core essentials impact the clinician’s ability to prevent denial and delays in optimal nursing care that contribute to maternal morbidity and mortality. Case studies within the education address ten common obstetric conditions including early labor, term labor and rupture of membranes, preterm labor, decreased fetal movement, hypertension, nausea and vomiting, motor vehicle accidents and falls, bleeding in pregnancy, abdominal pain, and urinary tract infections. As clinicians work through the case studies, they are challenged to assess and prioritize patients’ acuity level using the Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI), analyze key findings suggestive of a variety of differential diagnoses, and consider effective communication skills related to SBAR reporting, coping strategies, shared decision making, and anticipatory guidance.

Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI)
This narrated, interactive education helps sharpen nurse clinicians’ clinical knowledge and skills who work in triage or obstetric emergency department (OBED). Its core essentials focus on obstetric triage basics ensuring clinicians appropriately prioritize their initial nursing care in contribution to the prevention of maternal morbidity and mortality. Clinicians will review and analyze an algorithmic, systematic approach using the five-level acuity classification index to improve the process of triage and outcomes factoring in social determinants of health, health equity, and implicit bias.
