  • Hemodynamic Function and Assessment is the foundation for the critical care courses and the information is applicable to all pregnant people, whether well or critically ill. AWHONN recommends that you take this course as the foundation before completing the remaining courses.

Understanding how the physiologic changes in pregnancy affect the noninvasive assessments of a pregnant person is important when caring for this patient population. The maternal mortality rate in the United States continues to remain high despite efforts from many collaborating federal, state, and local agencies, as well as the work of multiple professional organizations.

Approximately 1 in 10 obstetric patients are admitted to the ICU with diagnoses that include but not limited to include hypertensive disorders, obstetric hemorrhage, cardiac disease, and sepsis. Regardless of the location, caring for these patients often involves a multidisciplinary team that includes providers and nursing staff from obstetrics, critical care, and the emergency department. Throughout these courses, you will learn the physiologic changes in pregnancy as well as additional risk factors that predispose pregnant people to hypertensive disorders, postpartum hemorrhage, and sepsis. Using critical thinking concepts presented in case scenario format, you will apply knowledge of key pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies in the management of this patient population.
