Standards for Professional Registered Nurse Staffing for Perinatal Units

The newly in 2022 released AWHONN Standards for Professional Registered Nurse Staffing for Perinatal Units provide updated registered nurse to patient ratios across all in-patient maternity care settings.
These professional standards are intended for those who budget for, plan, and implement perinatal registered nurse staffing. Registered nurse staffing in perinatal units is challenging because of the dynamic nature of the patients and clinical situations encountered. This document is supported by literature published over the last 10 years as well as recommendations by other professional and regulatory associations. Data collected from an AWHONN member survey informed the decision to include more supportive rationale statements as well as tools to promote implementation.
NEW: Detailed appendices with sample acuity grids, contingency staffing plans, an overcapacity trigger grid, and examples of disaster planning are included in the new standards.
