This chapter provides the clinician with information on perinatal quality and safety, including definitions of maternal and infant mortaility, causes of increased maternal mortality and morbidity including racial and ethnic disparities, threats to perinatal safety, and strategies for quality improvement. Review of this chapter may assist the clinician in preparing for the multidisciplinary Obstetric and Neonatal Quality and Safety Certification (C-ONQS) offered by the National Certification Corporation (NCC).
