The purpose of this Guideline is to enhance knowledge of the risks of late preterm birth and the unique needs of the late preterm neonate in order to facilitate timely assessment and intervention. The clinical practice recommendations supported by rationale statements are derived from the latest scientific evidence. The Guideline describes evidence-based approaches to accomplish the following:

    • Identify the late preterm neonate at risk for complications during the continuum from birth through hospital discharge.
    • Recognize the physiologic limitations and challenges of an LPI that place him or her at increased risk.
    • Validate the LPI’s gestational age.
    • Perform a risk assessment of perinatal events that may adversely impact the LPI.
    • Assess the risk for and implement appropriate interventions to help prevent and manage the following complications: respiratory distress, hypothermia, hypoglycemia, sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia, and feeding issues.
    • Incorporate elements of the Guideline into nursing interventions, discharge planning, follow-up care and parent education. This Guideline addresses a broad range of risks associated with late preterm birth. Some are parameters that present significant but perhaps preventable risk, and others may be categorized as unavoidable risks related to factors.
