Objectives:
- Enhance the empathetic imagination of the reader putting him/her in a position of another person whether fiction or real.
- Place a reader into a new context he/she may not be able to access through their own lived experiences.
- Foster curiosity regarding diversity of race, class, gender, politics outside one’s own culture.
Description:
Book clubs encourage critical thinking and deeper engagement through storytelling or factual information. The idea behind them is to broaden one's own perspectives and work to understand different viewpoints.
You will be given 3 book titles to read. Read the books. Sometimes, it’s hard to find time to read or you dislike the book. The books will vary in subject matter but all will be part of a perinatal nurse’s repertoire. The goal is to view varied perceptions of a topic or topics so you can further develop empathy and emotional intelligence.
For this mini event, I will offer insights on a memoir, “The Blue Cotton Gown,” by Patricia Harman, a young adult novel about sexual assault called “Speak,” by Laurie Halse Anderson, and a novel about reproductive injustice and the Jane Collection from the early 1970s by Kerri Maher entitled, “All You Have to Do is Call.”
