Over 700 women die each year from problems related to pregnancy or delivery complications. The goal is to listen to her concerns and act quickly.

The CDC’s Hear Her campaign seeks to raise awareness of urgent maternal warning signs during and after pregnancy and improve communication between patients and their healthcare providers.

The Campaign Objectives are:

• Increase awareness of serious pregnancy-related complications and their warning signs.

• Empower women to speak up and raise concerns.

• Encourage women’s support systems to engage in important conversations with her.

• Provide tools for women and providers to better engage in life-saving conversations.

ACOG Guidelines: Optimizing Postpartum Care

Gretchen McCool, MSN, CNM, IBCLC

Franklin, WI

The early days/weeks of postpartum are a critical period for a woman and her infant(s) setting the stage for long term health and well being. There are many challenges that may take place during the “fourth trimester” that require addressing in a timely manner. Gone are the “six-week visits” with the newest recommendation that women be seen for the first post partum visit at no greater than three weeks after the birth. A more complex visit then takes place no later than 12 weeks post partum. Post partum care should become an ongoing process rather than a single encounter and guidance should begin during pregnancy. Reproductive plans and contraception options should also be included in the discussion between the woman and her provider and ideally, this discussion begins during prenatal care.

This presentation will discuss the ACOG Committee Opinion #736, Optimizing Postpartum Care, published in May of 2018.
