This webinar provides an overview of role of the advanced practice nurse and nurse-midwife in the prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancies and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders through the provision of alcohol screening and brief intervention. It includes the epidemiology of alcohol use among women in the United States, including alcohol use during pregnancy; health impacts of excessive alcohol use; evidence base for universal screening for excessive alcohol use; core principles of harm reduction and their application to alcohol screening and brief intervention for excessive alcohol use; core concepts and procedures in alcohol screening and brief intervention; and overview of validated screening tools for the general population and for pregnant people.
